A wee while ago I was given this dress by a friend's Mother,
I had put off posting about it as I wanted to get photo's that would do it justice, I've given up waiting for the optimum weather and just done it, please bear with me!
Originally the dress was given to my friend, however after modelling it for her teenage daughters who kindly informed her that she 'looked like she was in her dressing gown', she passed it onto me! whoop whoop...yes please!
The fabric is totally unreal, it has clearly been very loved as you can see by the bias binding on the neck wearing through. I took it to my Gran hoping that she could tell me something about the composition and era as she was a tailor back in the day.
We both decided it was a silk fabric, (it has a silk feel, but not a typical eastern silk feel, slightly thicker...perhaps with a cotton in there too?) She seemed to think that going by the detailing on the seams (the whole thing is French seamed) & the classic drop waist that it was a 1930's style, weather it was made then, who knows?
The floral reminds me of an older style Liberty print.
It truly is a prized possession!

And its one of those great dresses that can be dressed up or dressed down to fit any occasion!
I would have no idea on what fabric or era it is, I just think its gorgeous!

Love the colours and the print, I'd say 30s too, but I'm no expert. Gifts like that from friends are the best.

It's hard to tell without touching it but it looks like more of a raw silk with all those beautiful little inconsistencies in the fibre.

Love it - the print screams 1930's to me. The style - I would say late 20's/early 30's. Just a thought about the fabric (bearing in mind that its made in England, and times were tough for regular folk in the 30s) - could it be rayon. It was invented in the late 1800's but started to be produced in commercial quantities in the mid 20's. I'm sure you could still get silk in England but it would have been super costly and this dress looks like a day dress for a middle class person or 'Sunday best' for a working class gal rather than a couture garment. Fascinating stuff - I wonder if it would be worth send a photo to someone in the textiles department at Te Papa for an opinion?
